The National CFIDS Foundation (NCF) identified radiation exposure and subsequent chromosome damage in its own patient cohort a decade ago. In more recent years, scientists, working with the NCF, have made noteworthy discoveries that have assisted in the generation of this model, the first of its kind to be applied to Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS) also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) as well as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME).
According to Gail Kansky, NCF President, "This is the beginning of a roadmap thatconnects radiation exposure to clinical disease markers that are present in patients."
Though we have our own work cut out for us, we are excited to be formally published. Without such a roadmap, meaningful treatments may just be a shot-in-the-dark and we would very much like to avoid that due to the complexity of the disease," stated Alan Cocchetto, NCF Medical Director.
This brings the NCF and its patient cohort one step closer to appropriate testing and ultimately towards greater understanding of the disease process that we hope will yield much needed targeted therapies.
